In-service training has become increasingly important in the education sector, as it enhances teachers’ skills and promotes student learning results. In Karnataka’s elementary schools, there is a lack of adequate preparation for teachers, particularly in the study of the field. Training is the deliberate process of imparting information, skills, talents, and attitudes to individuals within an organization to enable them to perform a specific job. It enhances and shapes employees’ knowledge, skills, behavior, aptitudes, and attitudes to align with work and organizational needs. Different kinds of organizations for training teachers, such as continuing education, are essential for improving teachers’ effectiveness in job performance. Performance refers to the actions and conduct that contribute to the overall effectiveness of an organization. Teaching job performance is defined as the extent to which workers are motivated to participate in achieving organizational needs [1]. Teaching performance in schools pertains to the efficacy of teachers in delivering instruction and fulfilling administrative responsibilities within the educational institution. The lack of sufficient in-service training in elementary schools has a direct impact on the work performance of teachers. Teachers in Karnataka do not receive sufficient opportunities for in-service training, and classes and conferences are not often held to allow instructors to stay up to speed on current events and to learn innovative and effective teaching techniques.

Well-trained teachers demonstrate high effectiveness in educational institutions as they use the information learned throughout their training to fulfil their unique responsibilities [2]. Consistent and comprehensive training is required to enhance their knowledge and abilities, enabling them to effectively fulfil their unique responsibilities in a rapidly changing culture with several accessible channels for learning information [3]. This study seeks to go further into and examine the impact of in-service training on teacher performance, with the ultimate objective of enhancing educational empowerment.

Need for Research in In-Service Teacher Education

In-Service training is crucial for improving teaching performance in schools, leading to promotions, pay increases, and other benefits. A study by [4] found that training enhances motivation, adapts to technological advancements, facilitates efficient machinery use, reduces material waste, addresses instructors’ personal needs, and reduces absenteeism. The Karnataka state government should provide in-service training to teachers to improve information quality. The impact of some in-service programs on elementary school teachers’ work performance in Karnataka state is still uncertain. Since no school system can be superior to its instructors, training for educators remains to be accorded top priority in all of our plans for learning. There will always be gaps in our employees’ new training, regardless of how effective it is. Teachers’ continuing education will keep filling up these blanks. The government in Karnataka state has not prioritized teacher training, which has negatively impacted the quality of education. Insufficient training has been linked to poor job performance and a lack of enthusiasm in teachers, leading to inefficient performance. Dissatisfaction with working conditions, such as insufficient or inadequate training, negatively impacts teachers’ effectiveness and performance. Teacher education is an ongoing process that comprises three phases: Training for beginning teachers, the induction period, and in-service teachers. The pre-service curriculum trains new teachers, while the induction phase introduces newly appointed instructors to the institution’s practices and activities. Onboarding prepares new staff members for their first assignment by providing the necessary skills and knowledge.

In-service teacher education focuses on enhancing the professional growth and development of existing teachers, enabling them to fulfilled their tasks and obligations more effectively. It provides instructors with the latest advancements in methodology, material, and syllabus, meeting the professional requirements of instructors in various academic disciplines. Enhancing teachers’ professional development is crucial for improving education. To understand the effect of an in-service training program, research is necessary to understand its impact on teachers’ proficiency and classroom instruction. An annual in-service training program is organized in every state, but further research is needed to fully understand its impact.

LITERATURE REVIEW

[5] performed research to assess the efficacy of a Teacher Empowerment Program on the classroom process. [6] effects of DIETs on the productivity of primary school teachers in the state of Kerala were examined. [7] discovered a significant association between in-service training and the effectiveness of instructors in improving the academic outcomes of secondary school pupils. [8] performed research on the effects of teacher training on multi-grade teaching. [9] performed research on the duration and effects of in-service training on classroom practices, focusing on important factors at the Elementary School level. [10] researched enhancing the abilities of primary teachers to provide successful classroom instruction in DPEP schools. [11] performed research to assess the quality of the in-service teacher training program for primary school teachers. [12] discovered that in-service programs were successful in enhancing the professional abilities of teachers. In [13] did research titled “A study of the effect of training for classroom questioning behavior on teaching competency and pupil achievement.”

Initiative and strategies for in-service teacher training

Since 1986, the “National Policy on Education” has led to the establishment of various institutions, including “District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs)”, “Institutes of Advanced Studies in Education (IASEs), and Colleges of Teacher Education (CTEs)”, to provide in-service education to primary and secondary school teachers. The Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) aims to ensure high-quality education for children aged 6-14 across the country. The program emphasizes the proficiency of teachers through frequent training programs, with yearly allocations of up to 20 days per instructor. The SSA program offers a 30-day induction training for newly hired teachers, familiarizing them with the program and the unique educational goals of the state or district. Teachers who have not undergone pre-service training are offered a 60-day training program. The effectiveness of a teacher in a classroom is heavily reliant on their expertise, proficiency in various disciplines, and ability to use effective teaching methods. “The National Council of Teacher Education (1998)” has established eleven teacher competencies for ensuring professional competence among instructors, including “contextual, conceptual, content, transactional, educational activities”, evaluation, management, and working with community and other agencies. Teachers have received training in both material and technique, focusing on developing their proficiency in teaching various courses and adhering to activity techniques in the classroom.

Research Methodology

The research used a descriptive survey approach to investigate 250 educators from 93 elementary schools in Karnataka. A random sample of 150 respondents was selected, using the In-service Training Parameter Questionnaire (ITPQ). The data was analysed using a four-point Likert rating scale. The study included 150 respondents at a significance level of 0.05 alpha.

 A random sample of 150 respondents was selected, using the In-service Training Parameter Questionnaire (ITPQ). The questionnaire was meticulously revised and tested using the Chi-square test of goodness. The study included 150 respondents, ensuring the accuracy and effectiveness of the instrument. The research found that the in-service program significantly influences elementary school teachers’ performance, highlighting the need for continuous training and retraining to enhance their teaching abilities and achieve optimal results.

CONCLUSION

The study suggests the impact of in-service training programs. Further research endeavours may include investigating the efficacy of elementary school teachers teaching abilities, the correlation between teacher education programs for elementary school teachers and their students’ academic achievement, the influence of teacher training and the impact of teacher training programs.
