Abstract
Gender equality in higher education has become a critical focus in global academic and
policy debates. Over the past several decades, substantial progress has been made in
expanding women’s access to higher education, leading to increased enrollment rates and
representation across multiple disciplines. Despite this progress, challenges such as gender
segregation in academic fields, unequal leadership opportunities, pay disparities, and
systemic barriers persist. This review synthesizes global evidence to examine the historical
evolution, progress achieved, ongoing challenges, and future directions of gender equality in
higher education. It highlights best practices from diverse regions and provides
recommendations for policymakers, educators, and institutions to achieve inclusive and
equitable academic environments.
